How To Break Free of Imposter Syndrome For Good: A Step-by-Step Guide

Last month, before I packed up my life in New York to start a new chapter, I took three days off work to shoot this remake Grease video

For years, every summer I’d go to Coney Island and think: “This would be such a cool place to shoot a dance video!”

I even had a list of songs on a Spotify playlist I thought about using.

But every time I thought about taking the next step forward and *actually* bringing my idea to life, something stopped me.

I was too busy.
It was too expensive.
I’d do it next summer.
What was the point of making this video if all I was going to do with it was share it on Instagram?

Then I decided to leave New York and move across the country and suddenly the possibility of doing it “next summer” vanished.

And with that excuse out of the way, I realized the real reason I’d never done it was because I was scared it wouldn’t be good enough.

I was scared I wouldn’t be good enough.

With my fear clearly identified, I took a deep breath and used a practice I share with my private coaching clients

I wrote down all the reasons I felt I couldn’t or shouldn’t make this video, then crossed them out one-by-one and rewrote them into statements that were more true for me.

“I can’t take the time off work” became “I can move my client calls and do less operational work for my business that week.”

“It’s going to be so hard to organize this project on such a short timeline.” changed to “I will make a list of what needs to get done and then prioritize each task.”

And “What if no one watches it” turned into“Who cares???!?!?!”

Then I got clear about why I wanted to bring this project to life (because I wanted to!) and let myself feel worthy of my desire.

Because it doesn’t matter if 10 people watch my Grease remake or if it goes viral.

It doesn’t matter if it’s perfect, or if other people think it’s good.

What matters is that I had a blast creating it. That doing it brought me joy. That I finally gave myself permission to do the damn thing I’d been thinking about for way too long.

Maybe you don’t want to make a dance video like I did, but I guarantee there is something in your life right now that you are haven’t done yet because you are feeling all the same fear I was. Because you’re feeling like an imposter or you’re worried you don’t have what it takes.

Use this step-by-step procecss to identify and move through that fear.

Make that phone call. Send that email. Apply for that position. Or go out there and bring your idea to life.

Because every time you confront your fear head-on, you open up a new possibility for yourself and your life.

with love,
Brielle
