Summer will always be my favorite season (I actually like the feel of humid air), but Fall is definitely my favorite season to dress for. Besides the one week every December when the temperature drops to 49°F and Floridians pull out their puffy jackets and Ugg boots (myself included. You can see the evidence here), I didn’t have a chance to incorporate things like scarves or sweaters and tights into my style until college.
Dressing for Fall was one of my favorite things about attending college in New England. I still find myself getting excited to start layering items in my closet and finding creative ways to transition my favorite pieces from summer to fall, and then fall to winter. (If you’re like me and love wearing dresses, I highly suggest buying a few pairs of fleece-lined tights. They are so comfortable and really help keep me warm).
In honor of the weather in New York finally turning crisp this weekend, I’m sharing my three favorite Fall clothing items below!
A Long, Open Sweater
On Fall days with cool mornings and warmer, sunny afternoons, I’ll wear a long, open sweater instead of a jacket or coat. It’s like wearing a blanket while still looking stylish.
This sweater from Madewell is incredibly soft! It’s warm enough to wear over a dress or jeans on its own, but still thin enough to layer under a coat or trench when the weather gets chillier. Plus, it has pockets! It stretches as you wear it, so I’d go one to two sizes down.
An Oversized Denim Jacket
While I love the look of a denim jacket, I generally find wearing one all day a little uncomfortable. I really like my clothing to move with me as I go about my day and denim sleeves don’t do that very well. That’s why I prefer wearing oversize denim jackets—the extra fabric makes the jacket itself stretchier and I can always add a thin sweater or hoodie underneath for extra warmth (and if you know me IRL, you know I’m always cold).
My sister found the oversized denim jacket I’m wearing above in a second-hand store (she has a gift for finding really great, unique pieces at thrift stores!), but I saw this oversized denim jacket at Madewell a few weeks ago and fell in love with it. The cut is very, very flattering, and it’s comfortable too!
Over-The-Knee Boots
I go crazy over over-the-knee (OTK) boots the way most people do about pumpkin spice lattes. They are by far my favorite thing about Fall. At one point I had four different pairs in my closet!
I love the style of these black suede ones from Steve Madden. They have which I find is a little more comfortable than a pointed toe box and esthetically matches my style more. I went a 1/2 size up in size so that I can wear high, thick socks underneath. Sam Edelman also has a similar pair here that’s currently on sale here.
